We are excited to announce that we will soon have a new website and online retail store for The Book Dragon. Our new look website will host more information, news and updates on all of our service areas, bringing you the very best from the Book Dragon.

We have updated this site which is now exclusively dedicated to our Smurgle Dragon Department. This is to ensure that we retain all of our original content and reviews.

We will be making tweaks to this page along the way, as we align this to our new look website. Please do bear with us during this time,  as we work to make the changes and developments that we know our Book Dragon Family will love.

Best Wishes

The Book Dragon Team

Welcome to
The Book Dragon's Smurgle Department

Where Your next exciting read is waiting to be discovered ...

The Book Dragon would like to officially welcome you to Smurgle Dragon, our Author Book Reviews Department.

Like our volunteer reviewers, Smurgle is an extremely generous and humble dragon, with a curious mind, and a love of literature. Books are Smurgle's treasure and he enjoys nothing more than filling his cave with all his incredible discoveries, much to the amusement of his fellow dragons.

For The Book Dragon team, Smurgle was the perfect choice to safeguard this all important service, and he remains truly humbled by the sheer generosity of the human race, and in particular, our incredible volunteers who give up their time willingly, to share their views, and love of literature.

Owing to their kindness, there is no charge to authors to have their books reviewed, and this alongside Smurgle’s constant hunger for more knowledge and adventure, enables the team to openly welcome all genres of fiction, non fiction, audio books, and poetry too.

Smurgle simply loves them all, no matter the age of the reader intended, but on the rare occasion he doesn't quite enjoy a book, our dragon is very well practiced in his constructive feedback, and careful not to say anything that would undermine an author's confidence and self esteem. For Smurgle knows that his siblings will always be on hand to work closely with our authors, taking on his feedback and learning from it, so that they can hone and improve on their writing craft.

As our Dragon’s generosity literally knows no bounds, we do need to take special care of him, and his human volunteer friends. Whilst The Book Dragon can guarantee priority reviews for our members, for our non-members we can only guarantee that their books will be read and reviewed. We are unable to give an exact deadline for this, although we do aim to complete these as quickly as possible.

If you are an author seeking to have your book reviewed, please contact for our Book Review Request Form. Please note that we only accept E Books in EPUB, MOBI and PDF formats, and we only stock in store and on line, paperback and hardback copies.

Rachel Coverdale

Rachel Coverdale was born and bred in the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside in North East England. Raised with copious amounts of animals but without the distraction of a modern TV set, she turned to books and her own imagination for entertainment. Animals were and still are a huge part of her life and inevitably they made their way into her stories. Believing strongly in fresh air, nature and outdoor play to give children a sense of fun and freedom, Rachel uses her books to encourage children to connect with nature and venture into the countryside.
Having taught as an English teacher for many years and now settled happily into the role of school librarian, Rachel ensures all her books are not only creative, imaginative and exciting, but also of great educational benefit. Teaching resources and a scheme of work are available for "The Boy Who Couldn't".
Rachel is regularly featured on BBC Radio Tees Book Hour with Bob Fischer and Shack discussing and reviewing her latest reads. She also travels her native North East England paying visits to Primary and Secondary schools, giving talks on her books and about the importance of nature and the environment they live in.
